With the New Year approaching, people start thinking about their New Year’s resolutions. These usually range from losing weight to trying something new and exciting. In terms of work, employees start to think about how they can better themselves and be happier in their jobs. A popular resolution is to be more productive and organized, to become a better leader, or an expert in your field. These resolutions are doable even before the clock strikes 12. The trick is figuring out how to go about reaching your goal to be a better you and keeping at your resolutions no matter the circumstance. Here are a few ways that you can better yourself at work.
- Set reasonable goals.
Goals should be something that you can strive to accomplish without seeming impossible. Setting a goal to become the CEO of your company when you’re only an analyst won’t work. Instead, set goals that you know will be possible. Maybe you want a promotion or a raise this year? Keep your eye out for new job openings within your company and look for ways you can take on more responsibility, but be careful not to get burned out.
- Get feedback.
While you’re setting your goals, ask your boss what you can improve on. There may be areas in your work that needs some fine tuning. While you are talking, remember to take the constructive criticism given to you well. If there were tasks or projects that you worked with multiple people on, ask them if there was anything you could have done better, like communicate more. You want to get feedback so you know exactly what is already working for you versus what needs improvement.
- Always learn.
How do experts become experts? They have knowledge and experience, yet they are continuously learning and evolving with their respect field. Something as simple as learning a new part of the business or improving your computer skills will help you to better yourself. Remember that there will always be a new product, process, or idea that can change an industry. If you want to be on top of your game, you have to keep learning.
These are a few different ways that you can become better at work. What are you planning to focus on in the upcoming New Year? Leave a comment below.
