Have a brainstorming meeting coming up? Here are a few easy things you can try to inspire a little extra creativity and infuse “new-ness” into your brainstorm routine.
1) Create office survival packs.
Everyone has 5 minutes to list 10 items that they’d put in an office survival pack. Award cash to build that pack to person with best answers & encourage others to build and bring their own.
2) Make a no talking rule.
Announce subject of the brainstorm and no words rule prior to meeting. Each person writes their idea on the whiteboard. Only discuss after everyone has had silent time to review all ideas.
3) Cancel the meeting.
Already have an idea? Instead of holding a meeting just ask a few people individually to critique your idea and offer alternative suggestions. Be sure to cancel courteously.
4) Relocate the meeting.
Meet attendees at the store. Ask questions of a shopper who is buying your product or product of a competitor to learn what you do well and gain ideas on what you can do better.
5) Be brave like a baby.
Remove labels from baby food and do a taste test in which you all try to correctly guess the flavors. This has nothing to do with most jobs yet practically guarantees interesting thoughts, funny faces, and increases trust.
Whether you try one of these suggestions or come up with one of your own, make sure to have an action plan in place. There is nothing more detrimental to the success of brainstorms than not having a real outcome. Individuals will be happy to stay invested so long as the impact of their efforts is clear.
